Anaplasmosis and babesiosis are globally distributed arthropod-borne diseases known for causing substantial economic losses due to their high morbidity and mortality rates. This study aims to assess the frequency and epidemiological features associated with the infection of Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bigemina, and Babesia bovis in three Creole cattle breeds (Chino Santandereano (Chino), Casanareño (CAS), and Sanmartinero (SM)) in northeastern Colombia. Between June 2019 and March 2020, a total of 252 Creole cattle were sampled, with Chino, CAS, and SM accounting for 42.8%, 29.5%, and 29.5% of the samples, respectively. Blood samples were subjected to molecular analysis to detect the DNA of A. marginale, B. bigemina, and B. bovis, using species-specific primers. Additionally, Packed Cell Volume (PCV), total serum proteins, and body condition were evaluated. Molecular analyses revealed the presence of B. bigemina, A. marginale, and B. bovis in 83.7% (211/252; 95% CI = 79.1%-88.3%), 59.9% (151/252; 95% CI = 53.8%-66.1%), and 40.9% (103/252; 95% CI = 34.7%-46.9%) of the samples, respectively, with 69% (174/252; 95% CI = 57.8%-80.3%) exhibiting coinfections. Notably, in infected animals, no significant alterations in PCV, total serum proteins, or body condition were observed. Multivariate analyses indicated a statistically significant association between the frequency of A. marginale infection and the breed and season, with a higher frequency in SM during the rainy season (P < 0.05). To our knowledge, this is the first molecular survey that evaluates multiple arthropod-borne pathogens in Colombian Creole breeds. The results revel a high frequency of B. bigemina and A. marginale infections, coupled with a notable frequency of coinfections, all without significant alteration in the PCV, total serum proteins and body conditions. Our findings enhance the understanding of the epidemiological aspects of arthropod-borne pathogens in Colombian Creole breed and contribute to the improvement of sanitary programs for these animals.

Angiostrongylus vasorum is a cardiopulmonary nematode, causing several clinical manifestations in dogs, e.g., severe respiratory signs, coagulopathy, and gastrointestinal or neurological signs. In the last decades, this parasite has been described to spread and emerge in Europe and North America. Scant studies on A. vasorum occurrence in South America exist. Recently, A. vasorum was detected in gastropod intermediate hosts in Colombia, where data on definitive host prevalence, e.g., dogs and wild canids, are still limited. Therefore, the sera of 955 dogs, varying in age and breed from seven different departments all over Colombia, were collected and analysed for A. vasorum antigens and parasite-specific antibodies by ELISA. In total, 1.05 % (n = 10; 95 % CI 0.40-1.69) of the samples were antigen-positive and 2.62 % (n = 25; 95 % CI 1.61-3.63) were antibody-positive. These results confirm the presence of A. vasorum in Colombia, although positive results in antigen and antibody reactions in the same dog were not detected. This study is the first large-scale survey on A. vasorum seroprevalences in dogs from Colombia.

Abstract This study was aimed at determining follicular fluid (FF) protein expression and its relationship with oocyte quality. FF and oocytes were obtained by dissection and follicular aspiration of the ovaries from fifty-two commercial Zebu from a slaughterhouse. Oocyte quality was measured by cytoplasmic aspect and cumulus cells and FF protein profile by SDS-PAGE. The SAS statistical package's PROC MEANS and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used for descriptive analysis and the Bonferroni comparison test for assessing significant statistical differences (5% significance level); 52% of the oocytes were categorised as having I-II quality. One-dimensional SDS-PAGE analysis of FF proteins revealed 25 protein bands having 9 kDa to 240 kDa molecular weight (MW); 23 bands were expressed in <3 mm follicles, 19 bands in 3 and 6 mm follicles and 20 bands in >6 mm follicles. The 26kDa, 57kDa and 68kDa bands' MW represented the highest FF concentration whereas only four bands (14 kDa, 34 kDa, 76 and 79 kDa MW) were found in <3mm follicles and only 2 bands (9kDa and 91 kDa MW) in >3 mm follicles. The 32 kDa band was not observed in >6mm follicles. The 26, 40, 42, 57, 68 and 240 KDa bands occurred with the greatest frequency. The protein bands which were significantly associated with oocyte quality (p<0.05) were 24, 57, 68 and 164 kDa MW for <3mm follicles, 13, 26 and 38 kDa MW bands for 3 and 6mm follicles and 26 kDa for >6mm follicles. The results indicated oocyte quality association with some protein bands.

Abstract This review summarises research over the last 10 years regarding sex steroids (17β-estradiol, testosterone, 11 ketotestosterone and 17α, 20β-DHP), gonadotropins (Fsh and Lh), their main regulators (GnRH1-3 and GnIH1-3) and their functions in modulating reproduction. It focuses specifically on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis in model and Neotropical teleosts (Astyanax altiparanae, Steindachneridion parahybae, Salminus hillarii and Centropomus undecimalis). Their regulatory role continues to be a subject of discussion since it varies, depending on multiple characteristics such as the reproductive strategies of the species in question and/or the conditions in which these were maintained during the study period. It has been described that Fsh acts during the early stages of reproduction by stimulating the biosynthesis of estradiol and testosterone which are necessary for gametogenesis, whilst Lh is involved in the reproductive cycle's final stages (final gamete maturation and spawning). However, Lh occurs throughout the cycle, in parallel with Fsh, in species having asynchronous development and multiple spawning, suggesting the need for both hormones during gametogenesis and final maturation. Recent research regarding species having reproductive migratory behaviour has highlighted a significant decrease in Lh β subunit (LHβ) mRNA expression when individuals are kept in captivity; this may have led to reproductive dysfunction in current culture systems, considered today as being the greatest problem facing contemporary aquaculture. Unfortunately, studying such topics related to South American species is still in its early stages so research must be focused on clarifying native species' neuroendocrine control of reproduction, especially when these species are kept in captivity.

Chagas disease is a zoonotic infection widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of America, including more than 50% of the Colombian territory. In the last years, an increase of outbreaks of acute Chagas disease has been observed in the east of the country due to environmental changes and mammal movements toward human settlements. Given the importance of dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) as reservoir hosts and sentinels of Trypanosoma cruzi infection across different regions of America, in this study we reported a serological and molecular detection of T. cruzi infection in 242 dogs from an endemic area of Meta department (East of Colombia), with recent emergence of acute Chagas disease outbreaks. The distribution of T. cruzi infection in dogs was not homogeneous, ranging from 0-41.4% and 0-5.1% in different sampling sectors, through serological (ELISA/IFAT) and molecular methods (conventional and real time PCR), respectively. Statistical analysis indicated that dog infection was associated with specific sampling sectors. Our results show a moderate seroprevalence of infection and active circulation of T. cruzi in dogs from this zone, which suggest areas with potential risk of infection to human that must be taken into consideration when Chagas disease control programs need to be implemented.

In Colombia, the control of the cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus lies almost exclusively on the use of chemical acaricides. However, R. (B.) microplus has developed resistance to most of the commercially available products. The aim of this study was to assess the degree of resistance to the major topical acaricides used in Colombia. The adult immersion test was used as recommended by FAO with ticks from 7 farms originating in 4 distant Colombian regions. The efficacy of the products was calculated based on the reproductive parameters of fecundity and fertility with groups of ticks (n = 40) exposed to the recommended concentrations of each acaricide, and compared with the respective control group exposed to distilled water. In general, products containing deltamethrin (25 ppm) and amitraz (208 ppm) were less effective, with efficacy values of <20% and 10-50%, respectively. Doubling the concentration did not increase the efficacy of either compound. The combination of chlorpyrifos (312 ppm) + cypermethrin (150 ppm) showed great variation between farms, with an efficacy ranging between 22-93%. Unlike chlorpyrifos, the organophosphorus ethion (622 ppm) was 99-100% effective in completely inhibiting oviposition in 4 of the 7 farms. In conclusion, resistance to deltamethrin and amitraz is very high in seven distant strains of the Colombian territory, varies widely for chlorpyrifos, and was not detected for ethion that was 99-100% effective

Lutzomyia antunesi has been commonly reported in outbreaks of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in the Orinoquia region of Colombia. The bionomics of this species were studied in the municipality of Villavicencio (Meta, Colombia). Sandflies were captured over the course of one week per month for one year in intradomiciliary, peridomiciliary and extradomiciliary housing areas. The captures were performed from 06:00 pm-06:00 am using CDC light traps and the females were processed for polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect Leishmania spp. A total of 22,097 specimens and 19 species were captured of which Lu. antunesi (89%) and Lutzomyia walkeri (5%) were the most abundant. Other species recognised as anthropophilic (Lutzomyia panamensis, Lutzomyia gomezi, Lutzomyia flaviscutellata and Lutzomyia fairtigi) were present in very low abundance (< 2%). Natural infection with Leishmania spp was detected using PCR in Lu. antunesi, Lu. panamensis and Lu. flavicutellata, showing infection rates of 1%, 4.8% and 7.5%, respectively. The present paper provides information on various ecological aspects of Lu. antunesi. An analysis of seasonality shows that this species increases in abundance in the hottest months (December, January and February), directly correlating with the maximum temperature and inversely correlating with precipitation. The natural infection rate is associated with the peaks of highest abundance.

Objective: Determining to six serovares Leptospira spp. seroprevalence in assistants and veterinarians working in small animal consulting rooms in Villavicencio, Meta Colombia that previously had been seroreactor for Elisa-Pambio. Materials and Methods: 72 sera samples were taken from a subgroup of individuals consisting of assistants and veterinarians, in turn forming part of a larger population which included another 7 human groups at risk of becoming infected by Leptospira spp.; a cross-sectional epidemiological model was used and subjects were chosen by convenience. The sera had remained frozen (-70°C) in the Universidad de los Llanos Animal Reproduction and Genetics laboratory since being obtained. A commercial indirect ELISA kit (Pambio) was used for determining IgM antibodies. hardjoprajitno, copenhageni, canícola, icterohaemorrhagiae, autumnalis, bratislava, australis and pomona serovars were used in the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). The protocol of laboratory of the national program of investigation in animal health of CORPOICA-CEISA was used. Results: MAT seropositivity was 26.4% (21% in assistants and 29% in veterinarians) Seropositivity by serovar was: 24% bratislava, 8% australis, 6% copenhageni, 3% canícola, 1% autumnalis and hardjoprajitno. No reactors to icterohaemorrhagiae and pomona were found. Serological titres ranged from 1:25 to 1:400. Conclusions: It was thus concluded that seropositivity in the group being studied was high and worrying, meaning that biosafety measures must be maximized for all people working in veterinary practice...

Objective Identifying probable cutaneous leishmaniasis vectors in a rural area a few kilometres from the city of Villavicencio, taking the relative abundance of sand-flies and their natural infection with Leishmania spphaving into account. Materials and Methods A CDC trap was used for sampling sand-flies in and around 15 dwellings. Pools of three females from the most abundant Lutzomyia species were used for identifying Leishmania spp. by PCR, with OL1 and OL2 primers. Results 1 304 sand-flies from nine species were captured, of which L. antunesi (75,6 percent) and L. walkeri (19,2 percent) were the most abundant. These was a low abundance of L. panamensis and L. gomezi anthropophilic species (<2,4 percent). PCR detected Leishmania spp. infection in two L. antunesi groups (total=123 processed females). Conclusions Due to the fact that L. antunesi was the most abundant species and was found to have Leishmania infection, it may be considered to be the main suspected cutaneous leishmaniasis vector in the rural area being studied. It is recommended that detailed studies of this species’ biology (including biting and resting behaviour) should be carried out, aimed at furthering vector control measures.
